The Greater Yellowstone Ecosystem in the U.S. Rockies hosts a remarkable array of carnivores, with the grizzly bear and gray wolf at the top of the food chain.

The balance of power between these two species can shift depending on the situation, with the grizzly’s strength and size often countered by the wolf pack’s coordination and numbers.

In October, guide Adam Brubaker captured a rare moment in the Hayden Valley of Yellowstone National Park where wolves from the Wapiti Lake Pack successfully chased off a large grizzly.

The bear, likely trying to take over a wolf kill, found itself surrounded by the pack and was forced to retreat into the forest.

According to Yellowstone’s senior wildlife biologist Douglas Smith, such encounters between grizzlies and wolves are common but typically non-violent, more about territory than aggression.
